Apple iPod Released

April 3rd, 2010

The iPad is released today at the Apple Store.  I will probably be the only one that will not be rushing out to buy one of these.  I think they found a good niche between phones & laptops, but for me I rather have either end.  I think this device could replace magazines and newspapers with easy to operate & read capabilities.  I will probably wait for the iPad2 to probably come out next year.

This isn’t in English – but it doesn’t have to be.  Seriously – what can’t they make a vending machine for?

UNI Beats Kansas in NCAA Sweet 16

March 21st, 2010

Not only is UNI in the NCAA tournament – but they just beat out the #1 team: Kansas!

Travis Heying/Wichita Eagle/MCT

For those of you that don’t know – I am a very proud University of Northern Iowa alum – and I could not be more proud of our teams!  I love the attention this is getting UNI and Cedar Falls.  The whole team is such a good mix of talent, but I have to admit – Ali Farokhmanesh really adds fire to the mix.  His ability to hit 3s realiably is amazing.

Good luck next week, Panthers! Let’s win this whole thing!

Diagnosed with the Entrepreneurship Disease

October 5th, 2009

Friends, please don’t worry, but I have been diagnosed with the Entrepreneurship Disease.  Although it is not known to be fatal, I will have to make some life altering changes in my life.  I asked how I attracted this disease, and the experts told me that most entrepreneurs are born with it.  When looking back at my life – he was right.  Even as a child I sold rocks I found outside down in my basement “Store” and even hired my elementary classmates with a signed contract to work for some imaginary business called Hollie Inn.  They would come to my bleacher at recess time and talk about the hotel we were going to build.  (I still have the contracts – and look out, I will be moving to collect losses from their breach of contracts!  Watch out at the next class reunion!) =)

As most of you know, I had left my full-time position at AmberWave Communications.  This was a very long and difficult decision stretching on for more than a year.  I first met the founder, Michael Rusch, when I was starting my web hosting company called the Unlimited Web Network when I was looking for a data center.  When I came on board at AmberWave as an intern in the summer of 2000, I was excited with all the things we could accomplish.  This is where I really started to get to know Michael Rusch who originally moved back from California to raise his family and start a company known as AmberWave today.  Mike has a great technical mind that finds great niches to produce products.  It was great working with him with the many successful products that were produced over the years.  This is why I offered to still work in a consulting role for AmberWave, which allowed me to help with tasks and projects where they need my assistance.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love the products that AmberWave offers, but after almost 10 years of working at the same place, I just kept feeling that something was missing.  I found myself more in a day-to-day operational guy, and not working on the product side any more.  Come to later find out it was the nagging symptoms of the Entrepreneurship Disease.  I missed the smallness of a start-up sized business and being able to move on to projects that excited me again.  So, after many sleepless nights, I decided to work for the side company I started in 2009 called Bisso Technologies.  More on that later.

To be able to put more than my free time on projects of my own is very exciting.  However, this is causing the next phase the of the disease – workaholic-ism.  Experts tell me this can be kept under control with the help of friends and family.  With their help – I should be able to live with this life altering disease.  =)

I cannot wait for what 2010 is going to bring!

iApp100.com Site Launch

July 31st, 2009

It is finally time.  http://www.iapp100.com/ has been officially launched!

Matt Patterson and I have been working on this project for some time now.  He already had the iPhone, and I just had an iTouch not wanting to go to AT&T – but already both of us had thought we need to make finding Apps for these devices easier.  Although we are always wanting to make it better and have it do more – we felt it was time to let the cat out of the bag.

The idea is pretty simple.  We wanted a place to be able to review an App, easily search for Apps by rank or category and also find out what Apps that just came out or had dropped in price.  One frustration was that Apps from the Apple iTunes App Store is that Apps can go on sale for a week – but you would never know it unless you just happen to look at that App.  We wanted to make it easy to see what was on sale – so you could capture the deal!

We have a lot of really exciting plans for this site – and we will keep you up to date on the progress.  You can keep track by visiting the homepage of iApp100 or follow us on Twitter @iapp100.  Please give us feedback for the site – we just want to make it as useful as possible.

Happy 1st Birthday, AppStore!

July 7th, 2009

birthday-cakeappleI could not believe that it has only been 1 year since the grand opening of the Apple iTunes AppStore.  I guess it’s just been in the media and growing so fast it seems like it has been around much longer.  50,000+ apps are already available in the store.  That is some major growth!  Be looking forward to later this week for an annocement of a project I and some friends have been working on.  I am quite excited about it!

Happy Independence Day!

July 4th, 2009

Happy 4th of July everyone!  What a great country we have!

As most all July 4ths, I spend it at the Okoboji lake with my extended family.  It is a great time to see everyone and have some relaxing fun.  On the night of the 4th, near Arnolds Park they light a great fireworks display right on the lake.  Many boats drive over then drop anchor and tune their radios to the sponsoring station and wait for the count down of the show.  Not only it is a great fireworks display, but the fireworks are perfectly timed with the music echoing over the lake with the occational boat honk for the favorites.  The show included songs such as: Lee Greenwood (God Bless the USA), Neil Diamond (Coming to America), Louis Armstrong (Its a wonderful world), Ray Charles (America) and Elvis Presley (Glory, Glory Halleluliah), among others.

If you haven’t been to Okoboji – you need to make it out there at least once to experience the great show with your family or great friends.  It makes my summer!
